- Focus on the type of media your market consumes. If you don’t know, ask. Follow them through social media and look at the posts they share. That way, your topics are relevant and “meet your clients where they are.”
- Keep an ear open for cross-promotion opportunities. The best “fits” come together when you listen for problems you can’t solve. Who could? Start to make a list, and explore the symbiotic possibilities.
- To best leverage media exposure (especially digital media), make sure you’re offering something people can buy or respond to. And have a mechanism in place to capture leads, whether on your home page or a dedicated landing page.
- Be clear about your goals for using media. Is it to gain credibility? Publicize an event? Your end goal affects the lead time you’ll need, so plan accordingly. A print media story can take 2-6 months to appear. Online–depends who you’re pitching.
